New Jersey Council for the Humanities Book Award
The annual NJCH Book Award, begun in 1989, honors New jersey authors in the humanities whose work balances scholarship with general public appeal. The nomination deadline for the NJCH 2000 Humanities Book Award was May 15.  For further information, link here.

Skylands Writers & Artists Association

Skylands Writers & Artists Association is a non-profit organization founded in
1994 by a group of Northwest NJ writers, and incorporated in 1995, by Daniela Gioseffi, founding President. The SWAA sponsors a wide range of literary programs, including readings by New Jersey poets, novelists, short story writers, and essayists.  For information on submitting stories, essays, and poems for publication on the site, or for a list of upcoming programs and/or award competitions, visit this lively site!

The deadline for submitting entries to the Skylands' Joe Salerno Poetry Contest is May 6, 2000. For information on this contest and others sponsored by Skylands, link here.

Ms. Gioseffi, the President of SWAA,  is also the creator/editor of the Skylands Writers & Artists website as well as Wise Women's Web, an e-zine of literature and graphics.

The SCCHC does not have its own web site yet, but it does have a listing on the Somerset County site.

The Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission administers programs and services that preserve, promote and protect the culture and heritage of Somerset County. The Commission also prepares and administers art and history grant programs; Somerset County Teen Arts Program, Cultural and Heritage Art Gallery; Annual Historic Preservation Awards Recognition Event; publishes the Cultural Connection Calendar of Events/Newsletter; coordinates projects that affect historic sites with appropriate federal and state agencies; provides an arts outreach program to the underserved; maintains a comprehensive survey of all historic sites in Somerset County; and maintains and updates a directory of Somerset County Cultural and Historic Organizations.

Although the SCCHC does not have its own site, it does now publish an online version of its Cultural Connection Calendar of Events Newsletter.

Wise Women's Web

The Higginsville Reader
The Higginsville Writers "promote interest, discussion and participation in literary endeavors in a creative setting."   Evening meetings are held the second and fourth Fridays of each month in member's homes and offer critique of work in progress, both poetry and prose.

The Higginsville Reader, a literary quarterly published by The Higginsville Writers, welcomes submissions of poetry, short fiction, essays, black and white artwork and photography. US 1 Worksheets
US1 Worksheets is a small literary periodical that focuses on poetry but does accept prose.  The group meets in the Princeton area every Tuesday at a member's home.   Attendees may read one poem,  or 2-3 pages of prose at each meeting for editorial discussion.

Wise Women's Web
Created by Daniela Gioseffi, the founding President of the Skylands Writers & Artists Association, Wise Women's Web is an e-zine that showcases women's literature and art.

Information from the Wise Women's Web:  "Wise Women's Web was initially made possible by a grant from the Thanks Be to Grandmother Winifred Foundation. A magazine of mature women's writing and art, its vision is to promote the work of accomplished women authors and artists on the Internet. Work is solicited from well known authors, who are published alongside of new talents. Submissions are invited only during the months of July to August for winter/spring and January to February for summer/fall semi-annual issues. Our policy is to promote existing books and artworks of accomplished women over the age of 40 years, by excerpting and heralding
their works online. We also publish original works. We are particularly
interested in writers and artists of social conscience and those who are
sensitive to the need to preserve nature's balances and a healthy
environment."

To submit work: e-mail daniela@garden.net with a one page sample and
a query; or mail a maximum of 6 pages of poetry,or a maximum of 8 pages of

Allow 8 weeks for reply. Enclose an SASE or work cannot be returned.We're interested in well crafted, high quality poems, short-short stories,review articles on mature women's books or works, reports on issues of interest to women, memoirs, personal essays.
